The Air Force’s Comprehensive Airman Fitness framework, outlined in AFI 90-506, is a proactive, holistic approach designed to build resilient, well-rounded Airmen ready to face the challenges of both military service and daily life.

According to Air Combat Command, CAF was launched in 2010 under the direction of then–Chief of Staff Gen. Norton Schwartz and later formalized in official guidance. The initiative was part of a service-wide effort to enhance resilience and readiness by adopting a comprehensive view of wellness.

At its core, CAF focuses on developing Airman by strengthening four interconnected pillars: physical, mental, social and spiritual fitness.

According to the framework, physical fitness is more than just passing a fitness test; it involves maintaining the stamina and strength needed to carry out the mission and reduce the risk of injury. The Air Force defines physical fitness as including regular exercise, proper nutrition, adequate rest and healthy habits that support energy and overall readiness.

Mental fitness empowers Airmen to effectively manage stress, stay focused and adapt to adversity. The framework emphasizes building self-awareness, emotional regulation and a growth mindset to support mental clarity and strong performance under pressure.

The social fitness pillar highlights the importance of meaningful relationships. According to the CAF model, connections with family, friends, coworkers and community help Airmen feel supported, valued and understood — factors considered key to resilience and long-term well-being.

Spiritual fitness centers on finding purpose, aligning with core values and drawing on inner strength. The Air Force notes that, whether through faith, philosophy or personal reflection, spiritual wellness provides a sense of meaning and helps Airmen navigate life’s most difficult challenges.

These four pillars reinforce one another, creating a solid foundation for personal and professional success. Through CAF, the Air Force continues to invest in the whole Airman, ensuring everyone is ready to thrive in every domain of life.

This article is the first in a five-part series exploring the CAF framework. Upcoming features will explore each of the four pillars and highlight real-world examples of Airmen who embody this balanced, resilient approach to service and life.
